No, this guy is simply preaching his religion: and I became a full on follower. You can tell who you are dealing with by their true work ethic and their way of interacting with the world. Gary is as true as they come.The results for me did not start with "Converted more clients," "got paid more," or "bought a new car." What Gary taught me is that is not the point: Gary's advise on the show (and his completely new take on his advise in this book) made me be a better husband and father; Gary made me be a harder worker; Gary made me stop doing stupid things that were actually harming me more than helping. ... AND YES, because of all of that great things started to happen (except for buying that new car, because Gary let me see how I did not need to waste that money). My kids see me more and I am a better dad. The book is ok. The author certainly has tons of enthusiasm and drive to succeed in his ultimate quest to own the Jets, but I couldn't finish the book. I found a lot of the advice simply clashing with the sensible things I learned elsewhere.For instance, early in his book, the author makes a very strong black-and-white statement that in order to succeed you have to be willing to throw all your eggs in your startup's basket and go full steam ahead. I, too, had always believed this brash, confident approach in business until I read Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World. And wow I was much more impressed by Originals than by AskGaryVee.In Originals, the author cites studies that surprisingly reveal that people who gave everything up to do their start ups failed a lot more than people who built their start up more strategically. The group that succeeded more treated their start ups as side hustles, hedging it as a risky bet until the particular side hustle was sufficiently de-risked before plunging in. To further illustrate this point, the author also cites examples like the Google founders, Bill Gates, the founders of Warby Parker (who he taught), and others.So, while Mr. Vaynerchuk charges his advice with more motivational umph, the truth seems to be more nuanced than to push a all-or-none attitude on starting a business. This is relevant if a founder of a startup wants to know the statistics of different approaches.I also didn't like the style of AskGaryVee. Due to the chosen format (a collection of Q&A), it felt unfocused,To me, this book's value lies in it's confidence building and motivational aspects. It's the sort of advice some successful dude might give you in a bar. It is a cheerleader. But if you're looking for strategic wisdom based on data rather than personal anecdotes, you should definitely supplement this book with some others that have more scholarship and discipline to them.
Listen, no matter what your business is or what you're into, this book (and audio book) will make you better at life! I am a Pastor, and despite some of Gary's "language", the work I do with teenagers in ministry has skyrocketed in effectiveness! Whether it be social media, branding, marketing, or just being true to ME, this book has paved a way for me to be the best version of myself. I used to dread working long hours, but thats because I wasn't doing it in a way that it capitalized on 1. what I'm good at, that 2. I love doing. One of the greatest things I've learned from Gary is to surround myself with a team of talented people that are great in areas that I'm not great it, allowing us to crush it! I post thoughts and quotes from this book (and gary's website) on pages that reach thousands of Pastors every week. Though running a church is a LITTLE different than running a regular business, a LOT of the ideas are the same. We exist to bring value to people whether it be a product, or something more.Thank you Gary for providing me SO much value and showing me how to crush it in youth ministry. Our students are engaging with me and each other better than they ever have before! Don't underestimate your reach, you really are making a difference. Though you may not believe what I believe, you are helping students in Springfield Missouri get connected to a church that truly does love them! Keep up the good work!p.s. I'd love for you to make a 4-5 minute video on how churches can use social media to engage their communities better (maybe w/o cussing, haha!)... Also, all the pastors I know are freaking about about the "legal" issues involved with snap chatting minors??.. Anyways.. If you do, ill post the video to the pages I'm connected with (5,500 pastors) and maybe expand your reach into another area of influence.. Think about it!p.s.s.
